San Antonio, TX (April 19th, 2022) - The UWS office has officially announced the Southwest region schedule for 2022 with the 6 team conference set for a 10 game regular season slate. The conference includes two newcomers in Luxoria FC, who play in the Dallas area, and San Antonio Runners FC, who will provide a local rivalry for the Athenians going forward. FC Austin Elite, Wilco FC, San Antonio Athenians SC and CTX Hornets return from last season’s competition. The Athenians will start the season on the road at Luxoria FC on May 20th before the home opener against Wilco on May 22nd at 7:00. All UWS home games for the Athenians will be held at Soccer Central, located at 6610 Low Bid Lane, San Antonio TX 78201.

Technical Director Leland Hammonds highlighted the matchups with the two newcomers as key games in this year’s schedule: “Starting and ending against Luxoria, who we expect to once again be a solid opponent like LSR (Lone Star Republic) were last year, is an exciting proposition for our team. Not to mention the local rivalry that is sure to bring some added spice to the games against the Runners in June. Our expectation are high as we look to repeat as Southwest champions and seeing the road ahead of us has me even more excited to start that journey here in 2022.”

Athenians SC is expecting multiple preseason games to be open to the public in the weeks leading up to the May 20th opener. More details will be announced at a later date for those games. The regular season will run from May 20th until the season finale against Luxoria on July 8th. The Southwest and Southeast regular season champions will then face off the following weekend on July 16th, and the UWS National Tournament will bring together the best 4 teams from across the 38 team league on July 23rd and 24th.

The San Antonio Athenians Soccer Club (SAASC) was created in 2016 and played its inaugural soccer season in 2017. SAASC is the first women’s semi-pro soccer team in San Antonio and features top players from the San Antonio area and beyond, including amateurs, collegiate, semi-pro and former professional players. After a change in ownership and a move to Soccer Central (6610 Low Bid Lane, San Antonio TX 78201), The Athenians lifted the first trophy in club history in 2021, defeating Lone Star Republic in the UWS Southwest Final 1-0.
